About this product

How the Mouldboard Plough works

A mouldboard plough is the traditional first step before sowing. Its curved body slices into the soil and flips it over, uprooting weeds and burying them together with debris and crop stubble. It is especially useful where fields are irrigated by trenches or get heavy rain, because weeds grow fast there and need thorough treatment.

Turning the furrow slice also breaks it up, and the buried plant matter slowly rots into organic manure that helps fertility for the next crop. The plough is offered with two, three or four furrows to suit tractors from 40 to 85 HP, so the size can follow the power you have.

Before you order, match the number of furrows to your tractor: the two-furrow plough is listed for 40–65 HP, while the three- and four-furrow versions need 65–85 HP. Plough when the soil is moist enough to crumble but not so wet that it smears, and follow with a harrow or rotavator to break the furrow slices into a seedbed.

Before you buy the Mouldboard Plough

A mouldboard plough is the classic answer to tough sod, heavy residue and weedy fields. Before you order, count the furrows your tractor can pull comfortably in your soil and check that the linkage category matches your tractor. On light or stony ground a disc plough or a chisel may be the easier choice.

Questions

Questions about the Mouldboard Plough

Plough a short test strip and look at the furrow. Every slice should be the same width, the furrow bottom should be flat, and the plough should not pull to one side. Small adjustments to the top link and levelling box usually fix it.
