Buying notes
Choosing irrigation equipment and pumps
Irrigation works when the pump, the pipes and the emitters are matched to one another. A pump that is too big wastes energy and a pump that is too small leaves the far end of the field dry, so plan the whole system before buying single parts.
Know your source
A deep borehole, a river and a storage tank each need a different kind of pump. Measure the depth and the flow before you choose.
Flow and pressure
Sprinklers, spray guns and drip lines all work at different pressures. Make sure the pump can supply the one you intend to use.
Filtration
Dirty water blocks drippers and wears pumps. A filter is cheap compared with the cost of replacing blocked lines.
Automate where it helps
Float switches, pressure controllers and fertiliser injectors save hours of attendance and protect the pump from running dry.
